For the last 22 years, Teenagers In Charge has collected material goods for young people in the city of Philadelphia through their annual Sneakers and Socks drive. This year, they are collaborating with the GAP Inc., with a goal to collect 1,000 new sneakers and socks throughout the tristate area, reaching as far out as Maryland.
Episcopal Community Services’ RISE Initiative, Executive Director, David Griffith says, "We are very appreciative of these gifts from Teenagers In Charge that will support the young people in our programs experiencing homelessness”. Teenagers who live in seven selected homeless shelters will have the opportunity to receive free sneakers and socks at their finale event.
Executive Director, Judith Dumorney - McDaniel says, “At TIC, our goal is to provide the necessary tools teens need to be dynamic and proactive leaders, off the streets and into a safe environment”.
Philadelphia’s 3rd District City Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell briefed attendees on this year’s Sneakers and Socks Drive’s goal, and what we can expect in the coming weeks. Additional supporters included a representative from GAP Inc., Philadelphia 4th District City Councilman Curtis Jones, Jr. and representatives from the local homeless shelters.
"I've worked with Teenagers In Charge for the last 22 years. We're happy to work with folks, especially with people active in the community”, said Blackwell. We know we have to do our part to help them. We’re really impressed with the organization's tenacity by working with us to do what they can to help our young people. The Enterprise Center is allowing Teenagers In Charge to use their space to have teens pick up their packages of various items including new sneakers, socks, & resource materials from local organizations. Teens will know, they can move forward, knowing people care about them in our city.”
