Philadelphia’s Anime Convention: J1-Con

Published

on

by David Cherry

For a long time, Philadelphia really hasn’t had a convention for its anime community, but now, that might have changed. J1-Con, on Sunday, September 14th, became Philadelphia’s first large-scale anime gathering and convention since Inochicon in 2010, and it has made a large impact. With hundreds of con-goers, it was easily the most attended event of its size within the city limits of Philadelphia.

What brought out the fan base? The events brought fans to Philadelphia. J1-Con’s game room held video game tournaments for Marvel vs. Capcom 3 to Street Fighter IV. On the other end, card games like Yu-Gi-Oh!, were filled with dedicated and skilled players competing for cash prizes. The highest-attendance tournament of the weekend was Super Smash Brother Melee, doubling the number of entrants than any other video game during the event, most likely attributed to the soon-to-be release of Super Smash Brothers 4. Every champion received a cash prize and a medal for being the J1-Con champion of the game tournament t they won.

For the panel discussion, The Black Tribbles and Gamechop, moderated the highly active crowd. Throughout panel Q&A new and recent movies were shown, from the live action Gatchaman flick to Lupin the 3rd vs. Detective Conan. The cosplay scene and the convention was also amazing, with about 1 out of every 3 con-goers dressed in costume, and even professionals showing off, like Eric “The Smoke” Moran. There were some notables that showed up as well, like Vic Mignogna, who has voiced characters such as Broly from Dragon Ball Z, and Obito Uchiha and Fuen in Naruto Shippuden, as well as Living in 8-Bits, a group of South Jersey natives who take on old-school NES games with new twists.

The Dealer’s Room was also filled with interesting sights to see and purchases, from custom-made superhero clothing with your favorite protagonists to body pillows and games from every era. J1 was an event filled with things to do and experiences to have, but will its 2015 re-appearance hold up the same? Only time will tell.
