Music Makes Me Happy Philadelphia 2016

Published

on

On Thursday, February 18, 2016, Music Makes Me Happy brought together creatives, activists, and educators for a night of music appreciation. Held at Indigo Bleu Design and Culture Center (3870 Lancaster Avenue, Philadelphia, Pa), MMMH featured a panel discussion consisting of Aisha Winfield, CEO of Jr. Music Executives; 100.3’s Lady B, music pioneer and radio host; Gregory “Just Greg” Corbin, Founder and Executive Director of Philly Youth Poetry Movement; Hip-Hop Artist Chill Moody; and Carvin Haggins, with moderation by yours truly, Joshua Nelson. Those organizations featuring art included: The Future Project, Portside Arts Center, Art Reach, and Art Sphere. The event generated $2,500 to be used for MMMH’s empowerment programs in Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Los Angeles.

Music Makes Me Happy. I’ve noticed these words quite a few times during my travels in Philadelphia. A few years ago, I met the founder, Joshua Dingle, at Ms. Tootsie’s off Broad and South in downtown Philadelphia. While attending my first MMMH event, I was taken aback by the number of people who turned out. But not this time. This time was different.

I strolled in and dropped my name. As I proceeded to the main area near the stage, a number of things caught my attention: the chatter from folks walking by, the scent of drinks in the air (provided by event sponsor Jack Daniels), and Nile Livingston’s artwork coming to life. No one knew how excited I was to see so many of my peers coming together. Maintaining my composure, I walked over and spoke with Chill Moody, the first and only person we featured for our Listening Party, and others I’ve made connections with at previous events.

Throughout the night I caught up with old acquaintances, remaining open-minded to how everything would unfold. I definitely anticipated music. I mean, the name of the event is Music Makes Me Happy. When Mr. Dingle took the mic, he spoke on the purpose of Music Makes Me Happy and the organization’s endeavors for 2016. After his brief speech, the audience was introduced to performer and Philadelphia native Joie Kathos, along with Jacqueline Constance. Finishing out the night was the panel discussion.
